Schumer and Manchin consider last-resort Senate run in West Virginia: A long-shot scenario discussed

Date:

Senator Joe Manchin’s Potential Late Entry into US Senate Race Sparks Speculation and Controversy

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin have been in discussions about a potential last-ditch effort to keep Manchin in the US Senate race in West Virginia. Despite Manchin’s initial reluctance, he has not completely ruled out the idea of running as an independent candidate before the August filing deadline.

The possibility of Manchin entering the race as an independent has sparked interest among Senate Democratic leaders, who are facing a challenging Senate map. If Manchin were to change his mind, it could force national Republicans to divert resources to West Virginia, potentially impacting other key races.

The idea of Manchin running as an independent gains traction if the Democratic nominee in West Virginia ends up being Don Blankenship, a controversial figure with a history of legal issues. Manchin’s allies believe that he could have a path to victory if Blankenship faces off against GOP front-runner Gov. Jim Justice.

While Manchin has expressed his focus on working with his daughter on a new super PAC promoting centrist politics, the prospect of Blankenship becoming the nominee could change his plans. He has until August 1 to make a decision on whether to enter the race as an independent.

Senate Democratic leaders, including Sen. Gary Peters, have expressed openness to the idea of Manchin running as an independent. The conversation between Manchin and Schumer continues, with the potential for renewed discussions if Blankenship emerges as the nominee.

As the May 14 primary approaches, all eyes are on West Virginia to see how the race unfolds and whether Manchin will ultimately decide to enter as an independent candidate. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
