U.S. Senators Call on President Biden to Nominate Qualified Individuals to International Trade Commission

In a bipartisan effort, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) have joined forces to urge President Joe Biden to nominate qualified individuals to the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) to fill vacancies and expired seats. The ITC plays a crucial role in setting and implementing U.S. trade policy, including determining whether imports harm domestic industries.

The senators emphasized the importance of having a fully-staffed ITC to protect American businesses and workers from unfair competition in crucial economic industries. They highlighted the recent closure of the Cleveland-Cliffs tin mill steel facility in Weirton, W.Va., following the ITC’s determination that imports of tin mill products from China, Canada, and Germany did not harm the domestic steel industry.

The letter to President Biden stressed the need for qualified individuals on the ITC to ensure fair trade practices and protect American industries from illegal foreign trade practices. The senators cited President Woodrow Wilson’s vision in creating the ITC in 1916 to enact tariff policies that benefit American workers and maintain economic leadership in the global market.

As the U.S. faces challenges in international trade, the senators emphasized the importance of nominating and confirming quality candidates for the vacancies on the ITC. They expressed their readiness to work with President Biden to address this issue promptly and ensure a fully-staffed ITC.

The call to action from Senators Capito and Manchin underscores the bipartisan support for strengthening the ITC and protecting American businesses and workers in the global marketplace. Their letter to President Biden signals a united effort to prioritize trade enforcement and promote fair competition for American industries.
