Joe Manchin Endorses West Virginia Mayor Glenn Elliott as Potential Successor for Senate Seat
Outgoing Democratic Senator Joe Manchin has officially endorsed West Virginia Democratic mayor Glenn Elliott as his potential successor in the race for his United States Senate seat. In a video message published on Mr. Elliott’s campaign website, Mr. Manchin praised the mayor for his determination, vigor, and vitality, stating that he believes Mr. Elliott has what it takes to be successful in the U.S. Senate.
Mr. Elliott, a 7th generation West Virginian currently serving his second term as the mayor of Wheeling, has been recognized for his efforts in revitalizing downtown, creating jobs, and lowering the crime rate in the city. His interest in running for the U.S. Senate was sparked by Mr. Manchin’s announcement of his resignation, and after careful consideration and consultation with state leaders, Mr. Elliott decided to throw his hat in the ring.
Mr. Manchin, who announced his decision not to seek reelection in 2024 due to disillusionment with the growing partisanship in Congress, believes that Mr. Elliott is the best option to keep the Senate seat going forward. With West Virginia leaning deep red in recent years, the Democratic primaries in May will be crucial for Mr. Elliott as he faces off against opponents Zach Shrewsbury and Don Blankenship.
The winner of the Democratic primaries will go head-to-head against either Republican Gov. Jim Justice or U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney in the general election. Mr. Elliott expressed his gratitude for Mr. Manchin’s endorsement, stating that he is deeply honored and ready to fight for West Virginia in Washington, D.C. as the next U.S. Senator.
