Outgoing U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin Endorses Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott as Replacement
Outgoing U.S. Senator Joe Manchin has made a surprising endorsement in the upcoming Democratic primary race for his seat, choosing Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott as his preferred replacement. In a video announcement recorded last week and released on Monday, Manchin praised Elliott’s character and leadership qualities, stating that they are crucial for representing West Virginians effectively in Washington.
Elliott, who has served as mayor of Wheeling since 2016, is in his second and final term. With a background as a former legislative assistant for the late Senator Robert C. Byrd and experience in law and business, Elliott has positioned himself as a strong contender for the Senate seat.
Manchin’s endorsement comes as he prepares to retire from the Senate at the end of 2024, leaving behind the last elected statewide office held by a Democrat in West Virginia. The Democratic primary race is expected to be competitive, with Elliott facing off against community organizer Zachary Shrewsbury and former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship.
Blankenship, a controversial figure who spent time in prison for violating mine safety standards in connection to a mining disaster that claimed the lives of 29 miners, adds a unique dynamic to the race. The winner of the Democratic primary will likely face tough competition from Republican candidates such as Governor Jim Justice or Congressman Alex Mooney in the general election.
Elliott expressed gratitude for Manchin’s endorsement, emphasizing their shared commitment to building a brighter future for West Virginia. As the race heats up, all eyes will be on the Democratic primary to see who will ultimately succeed Manchin in the U.S. Senate.
