Former Delegate Moore Capito Leads in Poll for GOP Governor Race

Former delegate and GOP candidate for governor Moore Capito is currently leading in the Republican race for governor, according to a recent poll released by the Coalition for West Virginia’s Future. The poll, conducted by NMB Research, shows Capito with 31% support, followed by Attorney General Patrick Morrisey at 23%. The poll was conducted after Gov. Jim Justice endorsed Capito, giving him a significant boost in the race.

Capito has been actively campaigning, attending events with Gov. Justice and releasing policy papers outlining his plans for the state, including eliminating the personal income tax, regulatory reform, workforce training, tourism growth, and public safety initiatives. He has also focused on education, emphasizing the importance of parental involvement and school choice options.

The race for governor has been primarily between Capito and Morrisey, with Morrisey and his supporters targeting Huntington businessman Chris Miller with negative ads. In response, Miller has launched ads accusing Morrisey of past lobbying work and pharmaceutical connections. Capito, on the other hand, has focused on introducing himself to voters and addressing key issues facing the state.

The poll also revealed that improving the state’s economy and creating jobs are top priorities for GOP primary voters, with 50% citing it as one of their main concerns. Of those voters, 36% support Capito, indicating strong support for his economic policies and vision for the state.

As the primary election approaches on May 14, the race remains fluid, with undecided voters potentially shifting the outcome in the final weeks of the campaign. Capito’s lead in the poll reflects the impact of Gov. Justice’s endorsement and his focus on key issues that resonate with voters.
