Key Results from This Week’s Primaries: Maryland Senate Matchup Set, West Virginia Governor and Senate Races Decided
The results of this week’s primaries are in, and the races have been intense and closely watched. In Maryland, the Senate matchup is set, with former Gov. Larry Hogan securing the GOP nomination and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks winning the Democratic primary. Alsobrooks now has the opportunity to become just the third Black woman elected to the Senate in U.S. history.
In Maryland’s 3rd District, state Sen. Sarah Elfreth emerged victorious in a crowded Democratic primary, defeating Harry Dunn, the former Capitol Hill police officer. Elfreth’s win adds to the increasing number of women in the House, where they currently make up only 29 percent of members.
Over in West Virginia, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey clinched the Republican primary for governor in a close race against former state Del. Moore Capito. Morrisey is expected to win in November and is likely to govern as a hardline conservative.
In the GOP primary for West Virginia senator, Gov. Jim Justice defeated Rep. Alex Mooney and is now favored to win the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin. Additionally, incumbent Rep. Carol Miller successfully defended her seat in the Republican primary for West Virginia’s 1st District against a far-right challenger.
In Maryland’s 6th District, Democrats nominated April McClain Delaney, a former Biden administration official, while Republicans once again supported Neil Parrott. The general election for this seat could be competitive under the right circumstances.
In Nebraska’s 2nd District, Rep. Don Bacon secured victory in the primary, fending off a challenge from right-wing Republican Dan Frei. This outcome presents a challenge for Democrats, as Bacon is expected to be a tough opponent in the swing seat come November.
Overall, the results of this week’s primaries have set the stage for some highly anticipated and competitive races in the upcoming general election. Stay tuned for more updates as the campaigns heat up.
