Key Results from This Week’s Primaries: Maryland Senate Matchup Set, West Virginia Governor and Senate Races Decided
The results are in from this week’s primaries, and the races were nothing short of intense. In Maryland, the Senate matchup is set, with former Gov. Larry Hogan securing the GOP nomination and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks clinching the Democratic nomination. Alsobrooks now has the opportunity to become just the third Black woman elected to the Senate in U.S. history.
In Maryland’s 3rd District, state Sen. Sarah Elfreth emerged victorious in a crowded Democratic primary, defeating Harry Dunn, the former Capitol Hill police officer. Elfreth’s win adds to the growing number of women in the House, where they currently make up only 29 percent of members.
Over in West Virginia, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey won the Republican primary for governor in a close race against former state Del. Moore Capito. With a strong red state backing, Morrisey is expected to become a hardline conservative governor.
In the GOP primary for West Virginia senator, Gov. Jim Justice secured a decisive victory over Rep. Alex Mooney. Justice is now the favorite to win the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.
Meanwhile, in Maryland’s 6th District, Democrats chose April McClain Delaney as their nominee, while Republicans once again supported Neil Parrott. Delaney is favored in the general election, but the seat could potentially become competitive for Republicans under certain circumstances.
These primary results set the stage for what promises to be a heated and closely watched general election in November. Stay tuned for more updates as the campaign season unfolds.
