President Joe Biden delivered an inspiring commencement address to the newly graduated West Point cadets, urging them to lead by the power of their example and not just by their power. However, the speech took an awkward turn when the crowd fell silent after his words of encouragement, prompting Mr. Biden to humorously ask them to “clap for that.”
Despite the momentary awkwardness, Mr. Biden touched on important global issues during his speech, reaffirming support for Ukraine in their conflict with Russia, addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and warning about China’s attempts to control Taiwan and Iranian missile attacks on Israel.
The President emphasized the role of the US armed forces in maintaining stability across the globe, praising them for their efforts as the world’s only superpower and leading democracy. He also reminded the cadets of their oath to the Constitution and encouraged them to uphold the school’s honor code.
While Mr. Biden did not directly mention his predecessor, Donald Trump, during the address, he hinted at the values he holds dear and the importance of remaining loyal to the principles of democracy and integrity. The West Point commencement address has historically been a platform for presidents to address military matters, and Mr. Biden’s speech was no exception, highlighting the challenges and responsibilities facing the new graduates as they embark on their military careers.
