Capito and Manchin Express Border Concerns but Vote Differently on Failed Impeachment
The recent failed impeachment attempt of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has caused a rift between U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. While both senators express concerns about the southern border, they took different stances on the impeachment proceedings.
Senator Manchin, a Democrat, joined his party in voting to kill the two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas. However, he made it clear that he holds both Republicans and President Biden responsible for the current state of illegal immigration at the southern border. Manchin criticized the GOP for refusing to support strong border security measures and emphasized the need for policy disputes to be settled at the ballot box.
On the other hand, Senator Capito, a Republican, supported the articles of impeachment and called for a full trial in the U.S. Senate. She expressed disappointment in Senate Democrats for not following the Senate rules and allowing the impeachment trial to proceed. Capito believes that Mayorkas has failed to uphold the law and secure the border, and that the American people deserve a fair trial to address these issues.
Other senators, such as Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of Virginia, also voted against the articles of impeachment, labeling the proceedings as a political stunt and a distraction from important issues like border security and job creation.
The divide among senators on this issue highlights the ongoing debate over immigration policy and border security in the United States. As the country grapples with these challenges, it remains to be seen how lawmakers will work together to find solutions that benefit all Americans.
