Polling Results Show Gov. Jim Justice Leading in Republican Primary for U.S. Senate and Governor Race in West Virginia
The latest polling data released on Wednesday by Jackson County radio station WMOV 1360 AM and American Pulse Research and Polling has shed light on the current landscape of the Republican primary races in West Virginia.
Governor Jim Justice continues to maintain a strong lead in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, with 55.7% of likely Republican primary voters indicating they would vote for him. U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney trails behind with 19.9% of the vote. The poll also revealed a lack of voter awareness for other statewide races, with many respondents unsure or not knowing about the candidates.
The survey, conducted from Nov. 13-14 with 414 likely Republican primary voters, showed favorable ratings for both Justice and Mooney. Justice had a favorable rating of 73%, while Mooney’s total favorability number was 49.2%. However, when asked about Justice’s family businesses facing lawsuits over non-payment of vendors and court judgments, 46.25% of respondents said they were less likely to vote for him.
In the event that Mooney were to drop out of the Senate Republican primary and seek re-election to the 2nd District, the poll indicates he would be the favorite among multiple GOP candidates. In the race to succeed Justice in 2024, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Moore Capito lead among the top four GOP candidates.
The poll also highlighted the presence of family connections in the Republican primary races, with several candidates related to each other or other elected officials. Delegate Capito is the son of U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Treasurer Moore is the nephew of Sen. Capito, and Secretary of State Warner is the brother of Economic Development Authority Director Kris Warner.
Overall, the polling data provides valuable insights into the current dynamics of the Republican primary races in West Virginia, showcasing the leading candidates and the level of voter awareness and support for each contender.
