West Virginia Governor’s School for Tourism Offers Unique Summer Academy Experience

CHARLESTON — Calling all high school freshmen and sophomores with a passion for travel and tourism! The first-ever Governor’s School for Tourism is now accepting applications for a 10-day summer academy that will take students on a whirlwind tour of West Virginia’s top tourist destinations.

Governor Jim Justice announced the exciting new program, which aims to educate students about the state’s booming tourism industry and the diverse career opportunities it offers. From outdoor recreation to culinary arts, hospitality to adventure tourism, students will get an up-close look at what makes West Virginia a top destination for travelers.

Hosted by West Virginia University and supported by the West Virginia Department of Education, the Governor’s School for Tourism will provide students with hands-on experiences and behind-the-scenes access to some of the state’s most popular attractions. From exploring the New River in the nation’s newest National Park to learning about destination marketing on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in all aspects of the tourism industry.

But it’s not all fun and games – students will also have the chance to work with the Tourism Department to develop new promotional strategies for the following year. As official tourism ambassadors for the state, they will play a key role in showcasing West Virginia’s unique offerings to visitors from near and far.

The Governor’s School for Tourism is open to one student from each county, as well as students from charter schools and the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind. The program is fully funded, covering tuition, room and board, activities, and instructional materials for each student.

Applications are now open and must be submitted online by Friday, April 26. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the Mountain State and kickstart your career in the exciting world of tourism. Learn more and apply on the West Virginia Department of Education’s website today!
