Gov. Jim Justice Endorses Moore Capito for Governor in Tight Republican Race
In a surprising turn of events, Gov. Jim Justice has officially endorsed Moore Capito to succeed him in the Governor’s Office. The endorsement comes at a crucial time as West Virginia’s primary election is fast approaching on May 14.
Moore Capito, the son of U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and grandson of three-term Gov. Arch Moore, has been gaining momentum in the Republican race for governor. However, the most recent MetroNews West Virginia Poll showed a very tight race between Capito and three-term Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.
Morrisey currently leads with 31% support from registered Republican voters and independent voters who will request a Republican ballot, while Capito closely follows with 29% support. Businessman Chris Miller and two-term Secretary of State Mac Warner are also in the race, with 16% and 12% support respectively.
The endorsement from Gov. Justice comes as a significant boost for Capito, especially in light of the escalating back-and-forth between Morrisey and Miller in recent weeks. Justice referenced the mudslinging in his endorsement, stating that only one candidate is focused on continuing the path of progress for West Virginia.
Morrisey’s campaign responded to the endorsement with criticism of Capito, calling him a “liberal son of a senator” and a RINO (Republican In Name Only). However, Justice emphasized the importance of unity within the Republican Party to support President Trump and work together for the benefit of West Virginia.
With early voting set to begin on May 1, the race for governor is heating up, and Gov. Justice’s endorsement of Moore Capito adds an interesting twist to the already competitive primary election. Stay tuned for more updates as the candidates make their final push towards Election Day.
