Governor Justice’s Proclamation: Promise Scholarship and Higher Education Grant Information for 2024-25 Academic Year
Governor Justice Proclaims Increased Financial Aid for West Virginia Students
In a groundbreaking move to support higher education in West Virginia, Governor Justice has announced that students who qualify and apply for the Promise Scholarship by September 1, 2024, will receive an award of up to $5,500 for the 2024-25 academic year. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on students and their families, making college more accessible and affordable.
Additionally, students who completed last year’s FAFSA and qualify for the need-based Higher Education Grant will receive an award of up to $3,400 for the fall semester. For those who do not have a previous FAFSA on file but are eligible for certain programs through the West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) or West Virginia Department of Health (DH), they can present their Department eligibility letter to their higher education institution’s financial aid office to receive the Higher Education Grant.
The eligible programs through DoHS include SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, CHIP, and the Child Care Subsidy Program. Students or their families in need of a replacement DoHS or DH eligibility letter can call the Office of Constituent Services’ Customer Service Hotline at 877-716-1212 to request a new one.
Sarah Armstrong Tucker, West Virginia’s Chancellor of Higher Education, expressed gratitude for Governor Justice’s leadership in making these funds accessible to students regardless of their FAFSA status. She emphasized the importance of completing the FAFSA to maximize financial aid opportunities from other sources, including the federal government.
