Jim Justice Wins Republican Nomination for U.S. Senate
Two-term Gov. Jim Justice has secured the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in a landslide victory, setting the stage for a heated general election race in West Virginia.
Justice’s main competitor, Congressman Alex Mooney, conceded defeat after polling consistently showed Justice with a significant lead for months. The race was called shortly after voting concluded, with the Associated Press officially declaring Justice the winner at 8:15 p.m.
In his victory speech, Justice expressed his love for the people of West Virginia and his commitment to adapting to life in the U.S. Senate if elected. With Democratic Senator Joe Manchin not seeking reelection, the open Senate seat is seen as likely to swing to a Republican in the increasingly conservative state.
Justice, a former Democrat who switched parties in 2017, received support from Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate, including Mitch McConnell and Senator Steve Daines. Daines praised Justice as one of the most popular governors in the country and the right person to represent West Virginia in the Senate.
On the Democratic side, Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott emerged as the nominee, acknowledging the tough fight ahead against Justice. Marine Veteran Zach Shrewsbury and former coal executive Don Blankenship were also on the ballot.
As the general election campaign kicks off, all eyes will be on the battle for the Senate seat in West Virginia, with Justice and Elliott gearing up for a competitive race that could have significant implications for the state and the nation.
