The race for rarefied graphite, a crucial component in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, has intensified as the federal government’s new rules threaten to shake up the industry. With China currently dominating the market by producing 97% of refined graphite used in EV production, carmakers are facing a daunting challenge to find alternative sources to qualify for federal tax credits.

The $61 billion EV industry, which has been experiencing steady growth, relies heavily on the federal tax credit policy to attract consumers with lower prices. However, the recent restrictions on Chinese graphite have sparked controversy within the industry, with some American graphite miners and politicians like Senator Joe Manchin pushing for measures to limit Chinese materials in EV production.

The ongoing political battles surrounding the EV tax credit policy highlight the tension between environmental goals and industrial policy.
