U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin Endorses West Virginia Mayor in Democratic Primary Race
Outgoing U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin has made a surprising endorsement in the Democratic primary race for his seat representing deep-red West Virginia. Manchin threw his support behind Glenn Elliott, the mayor of Wheeling, in a move that could shake up the political landscape in the state.
In a video released by Elliott’s campaign, Manchin praised the mayor’s track record of creating jobs, lowering crime rates, and revitalizing downtown Wheeling. Manchin described Elliott as a man with the determination and vigor needed to serve in the U.S. Senate, and someone who will always put West Virginia first.
Manchin’s decision not to seek reelection in 2024 has left Democrats scrambling to hold onto the seat in a state that has become increasingly Republican in recent years. The endorsement of Elliott, a lawyer and former legislative assistant to the late U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, could give Democrats a fighting chance in the upcoming primary.
Elliott will face tough competition from Marine Corps veteran Zach Shrewsbury and ex-coal executive Don Blankenship in the Democratic primary. The winner will then go on to face either Republican Gov. Jim Justice or U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney in the general election.
Elliott, like Manchin, has shown a willingness to break from party lines when necessary. He has expressed support for many of President Joe Biden’s policies, particularly the bipartisan infrastructure bill that brought much-needed funding to Wheeling for downtown revitalization.
In a state where many feel ignored by Washington, Elliott’s message of putting West Virginia first and listening to the concerns of its residents could resonate with voters. As the race heats up, all eyes will be on the Democratic primary on May 14 to see if Elliott can secure the nomination and carry on Manchin’s legacy in the Senate.
