Outgoing Sen. Joe Manchin endorses Wheeling mayor in W.Va. Senate race
Outgoing U.S. Senator Joe Manchin has made a significant endorsement in the Democratic primary race for his seat representing West Virginia. Manchin has thrown his support behind Glenn Elliott, the mayor of Wheeling, describing him as a man with the determination and vitality needed to serve in the U.S. Senate.
In a video released by Elliott’s campaign, Manchin praised Elliott’s track record of job creation, crime reduction, and downtown revitalization in Wheeling. Manchin emphasized Elliott’s commitment to putting the country and state before partisan politics, highlighting his belief that Elliott will fight for the best interests of West Virginia.
Manchin’s decision not to seek reelection in 2024 has left the Democratic Party facing challenges in holding onto the seat in deep-red West Virginia. Elliott, a lawyer and former legislative assistant to the late Senator Robert Byrd, acknowledged the uphill battle ahead in the primary race against opponents Marine Corps veteran Zach Shrewsbury and ex-coal executive Don Blankenship.
If successful in the Democratic primary, Elliott will face either Republican Governor Jim Justice or U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney in the general election. Elliott expressed support for President Joe Biden’s economic development initiatives, including the bipartisan infrastructure bill that provided funding for Wheeling’s downtown revitalization.
Elliott also acknowledged the frustration felt by many West Virginians who believe they have been disregarded and ignored by Washington. He emphasized the importance of listening to and addressing the concerns of the people in West Virginia, a sentiment echoed by Senator Manchin in his endorsement of Elliott.
The race for the Senate seat in West Virginia is heating up, with Elliott positioning himself as a candidate who will prioritize the needs of the state and its residents. As the primary election approaches, all eyes will be on the outcome of this closely watched race.
