“Gov. Jim Justice and Congressman Alex Mooney Each Have Over $1 Million Cash on Hand for U.S. Senate Primary Race”
The Republican primary race for U.S. Senate in West Virginia is heating up as Gov. Jim Justice and Congressman Alex Mooney each have more than $1 million cash on hand, according to recent filings with the Federal Elections Commission.
Justice’s campaign has $1,061,211.10 on hand, having brought in $2,577,752.22 in contributions since the start of the campaign. The campaign has reported spending $1,516,541.12. Additionally, a political action committee called “Defend American Jobs” has independently put up $3.2 million to support Justice.
On the other hand, Mooney’s campaign has $1,294,772.78 on hand, with total contributions of $3,182,358.70 and total spending of $1,887,585.92. Club for Growth Action has also contributed $2.1 million to oppose Justice and support Mooney.
The primary election is set for May 14, with early voting starting on May 1. According to the latest MetroNews West Virginia Poll, Justice leads with 66% support compared to Mooney’s 24%.
The winner of the Republican primary is expected to have a strong chance of winning in November, as West Virginia has been trending more Republican. Several Democrats are also vying for their party’s nomination, including Marine Corps veteran Zach Shrewsbury and Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott.
It remains to be seen how the race will unfold in the coming weeks, but with significant financial resources and support from various groups, both Justice and Mooney are gearing up for a competitive primary battle.
