Gov. Jim Justice and Babydog Make Surprise Visit to Emerson Elementary, Deliver $28 Million Check for New School Construction

PARKERSBURG – Excitement filled the gym at Emerson Elementary on Friday as Gov. Jim Justice and West Virginia’s first dog, Babydog, made a surprise visit to deliver a check for nearly $28 million from the West Virginia School Building Authority to Wood County Schools for new school construction.

The check, totaling $27,928,940, will be combined with a $62 million bond sale approved by Wood County voters in 2022. This funding will be used for various projects, including auditorium renovations at Parkersburg and Parkersburg South high schools, improvements to county athletic facilities, security enhancements, and the construction of three new elementary schools in Vienna, North Parkersburg, and Lubeck.

During the visit, Gov. Justice encouraged the students to aim high and surround themselves with positive influences. The crowd erupted with excitement as Babydog was introduced, and the students had the opportunity to meet the furry mascot up close.

Wood County Schools Superintendent Christie Willis expressed gratitude to all those involved in securing the funding, emphasizing that the investment will benefit the entire community. The event concluded with a heartwarming rendition of “Country Roads” by the students and a special presentation of a Wood County Schools bandana to Babydog.

The visit from Gov. Justice and Babydog left a lasting impression on the students and staff at Emerson Elementary, showcasing the importance of education and community support in shaping a brighter future for all. Stay tuned for updates on the new school construction projects in Wood County Schools.
