Today’s Political Updates: Lindsey Graham, Virginia Thomas, and Alex Mooney

In today’s news roundup, we take a look at the legal expenses of Lindsey Graham, campaign contributions by Virginia Thomas, and dining habits of Alex Mooney.

First up, Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina used $350,000 of his campaign funds to pay the law firm Jones Day. The firm was hired to help Graham avoid testifying about attempts to overthrow the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia. Despite objections, Graham’s legal team took the case all the way to the Supreme Court. Graham also created a legal expense fund that raised $158,000 through February.

Next, Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, donated $500 to the campaign of Rep. Chip Roy from Texas. This is part of a larger pattern of donations to Republican candidates since 2010. Allegations of conflicts of interest have surrounded the Thomases, with calls for Justice Thomas to resign.

Lastly, Rep. Alex Mooney from West Virginia is under investigation for using campaign funds for personal expenses. He reported small-dollar expenses at restaurants, including Starbucks, totaling $536. This comes as Mooney faces two separate investigations by the House Committee on Ethics. One involves alleged misuse of campaign funds for personal expenses, while the other involves accepting a below-market-value trip to Aruba.
