New Polling Shows Sen. Joe Manchin Trailing in U.S. Senate Race
In a recent poll conducted by East Carolina University, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia is trailing behind both of his major Republican opponents in the upcoming 2024 Senate race. The poll, which surveyed 957 registered West Virginia voters, shows that Governor Jim Justice and Rep. Alex Mooney are both leading Manchin in the race.
Governor Justice is currently leading Manchin by 22 points, with 54% of respondents favoring Justice compared to 32% for Manchin. On the other hand, Rep. Mooney is leading Manchin by a narrower margin, with 41% of respondents preferring Mooney and 40% favoring Manchin.
The poll also revealed that Manchin is facing challenges with registered Democrats and independents, and his numbers are being affected by the unpopularity of President Joe Biden in the state. Despite these challenges, Manchin has yet to announce his plans for re-election, with speculation that he may also consider a third-party run for president.
In the Republican primary, respondents favored Governor Justice over Rep. Mooney, with 53% supporting Justice and 12% supporting Mooney. The poll also looked at support for multiple Republican candidates for president, with former President Donald Trump leading the pack with 54% of respondents supporting him.
Overall, the poll indicates that Governor Justice is the clear favorite to win in West Virginia’s 2024 U.S. Senate election, given his popularity as a Republican governor challenging an unpopular Democratic incumbent in a heavily Republican state.
The margin of error for the poll was plus/minus 3.7%, and it surveyed both landline interactive voice response (IVR) and an online panel. The results highlight the competitive nature of the upcoming Senate race in West Virginia and the potential challenges that Senator Manchin may face in his bid for re-election.
