Sen. Joe Manchin endorses Democratic mayor for his Senate seat, top pickup opportunity for Republicans

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has officially endorsed Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott (D) as his successor in the upcoming Senate race, a move that has sparked excitement and anticipation among both Democrats and Republicans.

In a video posted on social media, Manchin expressed his full support for Elliott, praising his determination, vigor, and vitality to serve as a senator for West Virginia. Manchin emphasized Elliott’s commitment to fighting for the state, creating jobs, and improving the economy, while also putting the needs of the people above partisan politics.

Manchin’s decision not to seek reelection has made his Senate seat a top target for Republicans, who see it as a prime opportunity for a pickup in the upcoming election. With Manchin out of the race, the competition is expected to be even fiercer, with Elliott now leading the charge for the Democrats.

Elliott, who has received encouragement from Manchin himself, is up against former coal company CEO Don Blankenship and Marine Corps veteran Zach Shrewsbury for the Democratic nomination. On the Republican side, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice is the front-runner, with Rep. Alex Mooney as his main competitor.

The primaries are set for May 14, and the race is already heating up as candidates gear up for a tough battle to secure their spot in the Senate. With Manchin’s endorsement, Elliott has gained a significant advantage in the race, but the competition is far from over as both parties fight for control of this crucial Senate seat.
