Chuck Schumer Pushes Joe Manchin to Run as Independent in West Virginia Senate Race
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is not giving up on keeping Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) in his chamber, despite Manchin’s previous announcements ruling out higher office. Schumer recently proposed a long-shot idea of Manchin running as an independent in West Virginia’s Senate race, a move that could potentially prevent Republicans from regaining control of the chamber.
Manchin, however, dismissed the idea in an interview with CNN, calling it a “long, long, long-shot scenario” and stating that he does not anticipate running as an independent candidate. While he did not entirely close the door on the possibility before the summer filing deadline, Manchin’s focus seems to be on other endeavors.
Former West Virginia coal executive Don Blankenship is running as a Democrat for Manchin’s seat, despite his controversial past involving a mine explosion that resulted in the deaths of 29 miners. With Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) and Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) also vying for the Republican nomination, the race for Manchin’s seat is shaping up to be highly competitive.
Manchin’s decision not to seek reelection in 2024 has raised speculation about his future plans, including a potential third-party presidential run. However, he recently ruled out a White House bid under the centrist group No Labels, further adding to the uncertainty surrounding his political future.
With Manchin’s seat now considered a solid Republican pick-up, Democrats are facing an uphill battle in the Senate this election season. The GOP only needs to gain one or two seats to flip control of the chamber, making every competitive race crucial for both parties. Democrats will need to secure victories in key states like Montana, Ohio, and Arizona to maintain their Senate majority.
As the 2024 elections approach, all eyes will be on West Virginia’s Senate race and the potential impact it could have on the balance of power in the Senate. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
