West Virginia Governor Declares May 2024 Older Americans Month
The month of May has been officially declared as Older Americans Month in West Virginia by Governor Jim Justice. This proclamation aims to honor the contributions of older adults to society and raise awareness about the various senior services available in the state.
The idea for Older Americans Month came from Kanawha Valley Senior Services (KVSS), a nonprofit organization based in Charleston that provides a range of services to older adults, including health resources and an adult day center for individuals living with Alzheimer’s.
Governor Justice emphasized the importance of recognizing the valuable contributions that older adults make to American society. He highlighted how older Americans enrich communities through intergenerational relationships, community service, civic engagement, and the sharing of cultural and historical knowledge.
Each county in West Virginia has its own senior service program, and residents can visit the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services website to find their local office.
This designation of Older Americans Month serves as a reminder to appreciate and support the older adults in our communities, and to ensure that they have access to the resources and services they need.
