Missouri’s Far-Right Candidate Faces Criticism for Homophobic Video

Outrage Over Homophobic Republican Campaign Ad in Missouri Secretary of State Race

The recent campaign ad released by Valentina Gomez, a 25-year-old Latino immigrant and real estate investor running in the G.O.P. primary for secretary of state in Missouri, has sparked controversy and outrage online. In the ad, Gomez is seen jogging through a historic district of St. Louis while delivering a message that has been deemed homophobic and offensive.

Gomez’s statement, “So don’t be weak and gay. Stay hard,” has drawn criticism for its derogatory language and insensitivity towards the L.G.B.T. community in the neighborhood where the video was filmed. The ad then transitions to a photo of Gomez posing in front of a truck with guns in each hand, further adding to the controversial nature of the campaign.

The ad has not only drawn condemnation from online users but has also caught the attention of public figures like former Democratic secretary of state Jason Kander, who mocked Gomez on social media. Despite the backlash, Gomez’s campaign has garnered support from far-right lawmakers and conservative influencers.

This is not the first time Gomez has made headlines for her controversial statements. In the past, she posted a video of herself burning L.G.B.T.Q. books and has repeatedly used homophobic language as part of her campaign.

While Gomez’s campaign has not gained as much financial support as some of her opponents, her social media presence has helped raise her profile in the crowded Republican primary race. Despite the criticism, Gomez remains defiant, stating that she is “waking up the lions to save America” and is determined to fight for Missouri.

It is important to note that Gomez’s remarks are not only provocative but also seem disconnected from the role she is running for. As a secretary of state, the primary responsibilities include record-keeping and overseeing elections, not making inflammatory statements or advocating for controversial policies like abolishing voting machines.

As the campaign continues, it remains to be seen how Gomez’s controversial tactics will impact her chances in the primary race and how voters will respond to her divisive rhetoric.
