Montgomery City Council Candidates Tied: Election Results to be Decided by Deck of Cards
The city of Montgomery, West Virginia is facing a unique situation after two city council candidates ended up in a tie following the recent primary election. With both Roger Landers and Sean Malhotra receiving 109 votes each, the city is now turning to a deck of cards to decide the election results.
The decision to use a deck of cards comes after it was determined that neither county commissioners nor county clerks could handle the tie, as Montgomery is split between Kanawha and Fayette counties. The candidates have the option to request a re-count leading up to a special meeting where they will participate in a “draw of cards.”
City recorder David White will shuffle and lay a deck of certified cards face down on a table, with each candidate choosing a card to flip over. The candidate with the highest card will be declared the winner of the election.
Mayor Greg Ingram expressed that while this method may be unconventional, it is the most cost-effective and efficient way to break the tie. He also highlighted the uniqueness of the situation, as tie-breaking by drawing lots has never occurred in West Virginia to his knowledge.
While some citizens like James Rowe expressed uncertainty about using a draw to decide an election, others like Ryan Pruett see it as a fair and unbiased way to determine the winner. The upcoming draw has generated interest and intrigue among the community, with many eager to see how the process unfolds.
The draw of cards to decide an election may be a first for Montgomery, but it serves as a reminder of the importance of every vote and the unpredictable nature of politics. As the city prepares for this unprecedented event, all eyes will be on the deck of cards that will ultimately determine the fate of the city council seat.
