Congressman Alex Mooney Discusses U.S. Senate Run and Republican Primary

Congressman Alex Mooney, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, made a stop at The Inter-Mountain offices this week during his campaign tour of North Central West Virginia. Mooney, who filed to run for the Senate seat currently held by Joe Manchin on the first day of the filing period, emphasized the importance of the upcoming Republican primary on May 14.

In an interview with The Inter-Mountain, Mooney highlighted the differences between himself and his Republican rival, Gov. Jim Justice. He pointed out that he has received endorsements from 31 members of the House of Delegates and eight state senators, while Justice has not received any endorsements. Mooney positioned himself as a conservative Republican, citing his voting record and endorsements from prominent conservatives like Ted Cruz, Jim Jordan, and Rand Paul.

Mooney also discussed his focus on cutting debt and building the economy, criticizing Justice for supporting spending bills that he believes will bankrupt the country. He emphasized his opposition to raising taxes and his history of voting to lower taxes, contrasting himself with Justice’s attempts to raise taxes as governor.

With five terms in Congress representing West Virginia’s Second District under his belt, Mooney is positioning himself as the conservative choice for West Virginia voters in the upcoming Senate race. As the Republican primary approaches, Mooney is urging Republican voters to participate and make their voices heard in the selection of their candidate for the Senate seat.
