Rep. Alex Mooney Downplays Polling Numbers in West Virginia Senate Primary Against Gov. Jim Justice
In the upcoming West Virginia Senate primary, Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) is facing an uphill battle against Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV), who consistently leads in polling by double digits. Despite the odds, Mooney is downplaying the numbers, emphasizing that the primary is about who is a true conservative.
The race has garnered national attention, with former President Donald Trump endorsing Justice and the National Republican Senatorial Committee backing him. However, the conservative Club for Growth is supporting Mooney, highlighting a divide within the Republican Party.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), who endorsed Mooney early on, spoke at a campaign event in West Virginia, noting that the dynamics of the race have shifted since Senator Joe Manchin announced he would not seek reelection. Cruz believes that the next senator from West Virginia will be a Republican.
While Justice maintains a significant lead in polling, the fundraising numbers between the two candidates are closer. Mooney continues to criticize Justice’s past as a Democrat, highlighting the governor’s party switch in 2017.
As the primary approaches on May 14, Mooney plans to focus on the southern part of the state, where he has not previously represented. With the race heating up, all eyes are on West Virginia as voters decide who will be their next senator.
