Americans Concerned About Social Media’s Political Influence: Pew Survey
The recent Pew survey on social media companies’ political influence has sparked bipartisan concern among Americans. According to the survey, 78% of U.S. adults believe that these platforms have too much control over politics, with both Republicans and Democrats sharing this sentiment.
One of the main reasons for this worry is the proliferation of false information, strong opinions, and unfair practices on social media. As a result, people are calling for stricter regulations to ensure that these companies are fair and honest in their practices.
In response to these concerns, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have come together to propose legislation aimed at holding social media platforms accountable. Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal are working on the Kids Online Safety Act, while Senators Lindsey Graham and Elizabeth Warren have teamed up to create a commission to oversee major tech platforms.
Recent events, such as the Capitol attack and the banning of a sitting president from social media platforms, have further fueled Americans’ belief that tech companies wield excessive political power. Additionally, concerns about the influence of Chinese-owned TikTok have led to government action, with President Biden signing a bill that could ban the app permanently.
Despite these efforts, there is a stark contrast in opinions between conservatives and liberals regarding tech companies’ perceived bias. While 71% of Republicans believe that these platforms favor liberal perspectives, only 50% of Democrats think the companies treat both views equally.
Overall, the survey highlights the growing unease among Americans about the influence of social media companies on politics and the need for greater oversight and regulation in this space.
