West Virginians with Disabilities Fight Against Threats to IDD Waiver Program Funding
West Virginians with disabilities are once again fighting for their rights as legislators and government administrators propose cuts to the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Waiver program, known as the IDD Waiver program. This ongoing battle has left families and advocates frustrated with the lack of consistent funding and support for those in need.
In recent years, the IDD Waiver program has faced threats of funding cuts, only to be saved by the efforts of advocates and families who rally at the state capitol to protect vital services. Despite promises from lawmakers to eliminate the waitlist for services, funding has not been consistently allocated, leaving over 500 individuals still waiting for assistance.
The recent revelation that funds meant for individuals with disabilities were reallocated for other purposes at the state Department of Human Services has only added fuel to the fire. This betrayal of trust has left many questioning the motives of lawmakers and bureaucrats who continue to put IDD Waiver funding at risk.
Individuals with disabilities rely on the IDD Waiver program to stay in their homes, work, and contribute to their communities. Threatening this funding not only jeopardizes their safety and well-being but also undermines their basic human rights.
Advocates are calling on lawmakers and state agencies to stop playing political games with the lives of those with disabilities. They are demanding transparency, accountability, and a commitment to keeping IDD Waiver funding off the chopping block for the foreseeable future.
As the special session in May approaches to address budget issues, families and service providers are once again preparing to fight for their rights. It is time for legislators and government officials to show compassion and respect for West Virginians with disabilities by ensuring they have the support they need to live with grace and dignity.
