Gov. Jim Justice Maintains Strong Lead Over Congressman Alex Mooney in U.S. Senate Race

In the upcoming Republican primary election for the U.S. Senate seat in West Virginia, Gov. Jim Justice continues to hold a significant lead over Congressman Alex Mooney, according to the latest MetroNews West Virginia Poll. Justice has the support of 67% of likely voters, while Mooney trails behind at 23%.

The poll, conducted from April 24 to May 1, surveyed 407 registered Republicans and independents who plan to request a Republican ballot for the May 14 primary. The results show that Justice’s lead over Mooney has remained consistent since the previous poll in April, indicating that voters have made up their minds.

Rex Repass, president of Research America, which produces the West Virginia Poll, noted that Justice’s support cuts across all demographics, suggesting a lack of volatility in the race. Despite Mooney’s efforts to rally support, including endorsements from state legislators and a recent rally with Sen. Ted Cruz, Justice’s lead remains strong.

Justice, a two-term governor who switched parties from Democrat to Republican in 2017, has the backing of former President Donald Trump and a strong business background. Mooney, who has served in Congress since 2014, appeals most to very conservative voters but still trails significantly behind Justice in that demographic.

While Mooney’s campaign has highlighted polling results showing a closer race, the West Virginia Poll indicates that Justice is likely to secure a “very strong win” in the primary election. With early voting already underway and the primary election approaching, Justice appears poised to secure the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat.

The West Virginia Poll did not assess Democratic candidates in the U.S. Senate race, as incumbent Joe Manchin announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection. As the primary election draws near, all eyes are on the race between Justice and Mooney, with Justice maintaining a commanding lead in the polls.
