Questionable assertions regarding voting pamphlets in a migrant camp highlight the divisive impact of the border on American politics

Humanitarian organization denies creating flyers urging migrants to vote for Biden

The humanitarian organization Resource Center Matamoros in northeastern Mexico has denied creating flyers urging migrants to vote for President Joe Biden, despite the flyers bearing their logo. The flyers, written in Spanish, instructed migrants to vote illegally for Biden once they arrived in the U.S. However, the organization’s founder, Gaby Zavala, stated that they do not encourage immigrants to register to vote or cast ballots in the U.S.

The origin of the flyers remains unknown, but they contained errors in spelling and grammar, leading to speculation about their authenticity. The flyers were shared online and even brought up during a congressional hearing, where House Republicans questioned Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about them.

The incident highlights how claims related to the migrant surge at the border can quickly spread and influence the political debate as the presidential election approaches. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have used the surge to suggest, without evidence, that Democrats are allowing migrants into the country to boost Biden’s re-election chances.

Despite the controversy surrounding the flyers, it is important to note that only U.S. citizens are permitted to vote in federal elections, and the number of noncitizens caught attempting to cast a ballot illegally is extremely small. The claims about the flyers have sparked online threats and conspiracy theories, further complicating the situation.

As the political debate intensifies, it is crucial to verify information and avoid spreading misinformation. The episode serves as a reminder of the power of social media in shaping public opinion and the importance of fact-checking in today’s digital age.
