Republicans Courting Sen. Joe Manchin to Run for Governor Against Patrick Morrisey in West Virginia
Republicans are making a bold move in West Virginia, as they are reportedly courting Democratic Senator Joe Manchin to run for governor against Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. According to sources close to Manchin, at least 20 wealthy Republicans have reached out to him, urging him to challenge Morrisey in the upcoming election.
Morrisey, who recently won the state’s primary, has received strong support from the West Virginia Republican Party. However, some Republicans are working independently to persuade Manchin to enter the race. This move has sparked quick denunciations from the state party, with the West Virginia Republican Party chairman expressing full support for Morrisey.
Manchin, who narrowly defeated Morrisey in the 2018 Senate race, will be leaving the Senate next year after announcing that he will not seek reelection. Early polling showed Gov. Jim Justice leading in a potential contest against Manchin, prompting his decision to step down.
Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, the only Democrat currently in the gubernatorial race, expressed skepticism about the rumors surrounding Manchin’s potential candidacy. He stated that Manchin has shown no indication of considering a run and has even supported his campaign financially.
As the speculation continues to swirl, the Washington Examiner reached out to Manchin for comment. With the political landscape in West Virginia heating up, all eyes will be on whether Manchin decides to throw his hat into the ring for the governor’s race.
