In the midst of the devastating wildfires that have been plaguing the United States, Senators Joe Manchin and John Barrasso have taken action to address the crisis. The U.S. Forest Service has been under scrutiny for its practices concerning forest management, land management plans, and firefighting equipment, prompting the Senators to request a review from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO).

The Senators highlighted the urgent need for a change in how the federal government prepares for, responds to, and recovers from wildfires. With the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires causing widespread destruction and loss of life, it is clear that more proactive measures need to be taken to mitigate the risks posed by these natural disasters.

One of the key issues raised in the letter is the need for active forest management to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk. Despite receiving significant resources and funding, the Forest Service has faced questions about the scale and pace of its timber and hazardous fuels management program. The Senators have requested the GAO to assess the Forest Service’s use of existing authorities and programs to support forest management projects and identify ways to increase the flexibility of federal funds for cross-boundary forest management work.

Another area of concern is the outdated Land Management Plans maintained by the Forest Service, with approximately 100 plans being more than 15 years old. The Senators have called for a review of the Forest Service’s new model for updating these plans to ensure they reflect changing forest conditions, public uses, and Congressional direction.

Additionally, the Senators have raised issues regarding firefighting equipment, such as GPS and communications devices, which are crucial for the safety of firefighters. Despite funding provided by Congress for the purchase of this equipment, it is unclear if the Forest Service has taken steps to acquire and implement these tools. The GAO has been asked to review the agency’s efforts in assessing and acquiring firefighting equipment to address any delays or shortcomings.

As wildfires continue to pose a significant threat to communities and natural resources across the country, the actions taken by Senators Manchin and Barrasso to hold the Forest Service accountable for its practices are crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of all Americans.
