Governor Jim Justice Responds to Attack Ads in West Virginia Senate Race
The race for West Virginia’s open senate seat is heating up, with Governor Jim Justice directly responding to ads attacking his run for the senate seat in a press briefing on Tuesday.
The ads have been pointing to Justice’s campaign donations to Democratic candidates, but Justice is standing firm, stating that his record speaks for itself.
“I sure do appreciate President Trump’s endorsement in every way,” Justice said during the briefing.
According to a recent poll by WMOV radio and American Pulse, Justice currently leads the senate race by almost 30 points. His closest opponent, Alex Mooney, has been campaigning on what he sees as Justice’s lack of conservative credentials.
Mooney stated in an op-ed published in the West Virginia Daily news, “Justice is Republican in name only. If Justice is elected, you will be disappointed when he votes with Senator Chuck Schumer and the Democrats when it matters most.”
Justice, who was a registered Democrat until 2017, defended his record by stating that he never donated to Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, despite his previous party affiliation. He did, however, make contributions to both state and national Democratic committees before switching his party affiliation to Republican.
The governor’s donations to the Trump campaign after switching parties have been noted, emphasizing his shift in political alignment.
As the race continues to intensify, voters will have to weigh Justice’s past affiliations and contributions against his current stance as a Republican candidate for the senate seat.
