Former President Trump and Republicans Out-Raise President Biden and Democrats in Fundraising Efforts
Former President Donald J. Trump and the Republican Party out-raised President Biden and the Democrats last month for the first time in this election cycle, according to campaign officials. Mr. Trump’s campaign, along with the Republican Party and affiliated committees, raised $76.2 million in April, while the Biden campaign reported raising $51 million with the Democratic National Committee.
Despite the fundraising success, Mr. Trump still lags behind in total cash on hand, with $48 million compared to Mr. Biden’s $84.5 million. However, Mr. Trump’s advisers are confident that he will close the fundraising gap now that he has secured the Republican nomination and can raise larger checks from donors.
The Biden campaign’s cash on hand remained steady from the previous month, as they invested in campaign offices and early advertising. Mr. Trump, on the other hand, continues to spend millions on legal bills, with Save America committee paying $3.3 million for legal expenses in April.
While Mr. Trump leads in many polls, Democrats have held a significant cash advantage due to Mr. Biden’s joint fundraising agreement with the party. Mr. Trump’s campaign has been busy fundraising, with a private dinner in Palm Beach raising over $50 million in early April.
Overall, the fundraising numbers reflect a strong grassroots enthusiasm for both campaigns. Mr. Trump’s campaign spent $5.5 million in April, while the Republican National Committee raised $32 million and the Democratic National Committee raised $35.5 million.
The filings also show that Mr. Trump’s main joint fundraising committee transferred $6 million to Save America in April, the largest transfer recorded this year. Additionally, a super PAC backing Mr. Trump raised $12.8 million in April, with a significant contribution from Wyoming businessman Timothy Mellon.
Overall, the fundraising numbers indicate a competitive race ahead, with both campaigns ramping up their efforts as the election season heats up.
