West Virginia Representatives Vote for Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House
West Virginia’s congressional representatives, Carol Miller and Alex Mooney, made their voices heard today as they cast their votes for Congressman Mike Johnson, who was ultimately selected as speaker of the House after a tumultuous three weeks of infighting.
Mooney, representing West Virginia’s northern counties, expressed his support for Johnson, citing him as a proven conservative leader who will push back against President Biden’s agenda. Meanwhile, Miller praised Johnson as an exceptional, conservative man of God who will prioritize an American-first agenda.
Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, secured the speakership after a series of contentious votes and the brief candidacies of other Republican leaders. He garnered all the Republican votes on the House floor, while Democrats supported Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
In his remarks after being sworn in, Johnson vowed to restore faith in the House and emphasized the need to get back to work for the American people. The new speaker, who has a background as an attorney, college professor, and conservative talk radio host, has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and has taken stances on various issues, including voting against further Ukraine aid and supporting abortion and LGBTQ restrictions.
With pressing matters such as federal funding deadlines and President Biden’s proposed national security funding request on the table, Johnson’s leadership will be put to the test right away. Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia expressed hope that Johnson can quickly get the House back on track, emphasizing the need for a strong leader to guide the Republican party.
As Johnson takes the helm as speaker of the House, all eyes will be on how he navigates the challenges ahead and leads the House in addressing the pressing issues facing the nation.
